[앵커]

리움, 간송미술관과 함께 3대 사립미술관으로 꼽히는 호림박물관이 '조선의 목공예'를 주제로 전시를 열고 있습니다.

우리 민족의 문화유산 계승과 발전에 앞장서온 박물관 설립자 호림 윤장섭 선생의 삶도 다시 조명 받고 있습니다.

남성의 공간인 사랑방, 문방은 어떤 모습일까?

책상과 종이, 붓, 벼루 등 학문을 닦는 데 쓰였던 용품들이 놓여 있습니다.

여성의 취향을 살려 꾸민 이 공간은 화려하고 영롱한 빛을 띠는 가구들이 눈에 띕니다.

호림박물관 신림본관 전시실에서는 선조들의 손때가 묻은 목공예품들이 전시되고 있습니다.

내년 2월 28일까지 계속되는 이번 전시를 통해 박물관 설립자인 호림 윤장섭 선생의 삶이 다시 주목받고 있습니다.

개성 출신의 윤 선생은 1971년부터 문화재 수집을 시작했고, 고향 선배인 최순우 전 국립중앙박물관장, 황수영 전 동국대 총장 등과 교류하면서 문화재에 대한 감식안을 길렀습니다.

"문화재는 개인 재산이 아니다. 먼 훗날까지도 공공의 자산으로 후손에게 전해졌으면 한다", "우리 문화재를 통해 옛 사람을 이해하며 교감할 수 있다는 것이 얼마나 멋있는 일인가" 박물관 한쪽에 적힌 이 글귀들이 국가유산을 사랑한 윤 선생의 생전 모습을 고스란히 전해줍니다.

[이원광 / 호림박물관 학예연구실장: (윤장섭 선생은) 기업을 해서 번 돈을 사회에 환원을 해야 하는데 방법 중 하나로 박물관을 세우고 문화 사업을 하시는 것, 또 하나는 인근에 성보중고등학교가 있는데 학교를 세워서 미래의 동량으로 키우는 것 이 두 가지를 중점사업으로 하셨습니다.]

국내 3대 사립미술관으로 손꼽히는 호림박물관은 도자, 금속, 서화 등 2만여 점을 소장하고 있습니다.

이 가운데 백지묵서묘법연화경 등 국보 8건, 보물 54건, 서울특별시 유형문화재 11건 등은 대표적인 소장품으로 꼽힙니다.

세상을 떠나기 전까지 문화재를 모은 윤 선생의 수집품은 다양함과 질적인 면에서 높이 평가를 받고 있으며 한국미술사 연구에도 귀중한 기초자료가 되고 있습니다.

성공한 사업가이지만 근검과 절제의 엄격한 삶을 평생 살았고, 문화재를 사는 데는 돈을 아끼지 않았던 윤장섭 선생.

윤 선생의 삶은 우리 문화유산이란 공공성과 역사성을 기업들에게도 각인시키는데 좋은 영향력을 끼치고 있습니다.

The Horim Museum, recognized alongside the Leeum Museum and the Kansong Art Museum as one of Korea’s top three private art museums, is currently hosting an exhibition on Joseon-era Woodcraft. The museum’s founder, Yoon Jang-seop, also known as “Horim,” is being celebrated for his lifelong dedication to preserving and advancing Korea’s cultural heritage.

Reporter Jeong Young-seok brings us the story.

What would a traditional Korean study room, known as men’s sarangbang (a traditional reception room), look like? It would include essential tools for scholarly pursuits, such as desks, paper, brushes, and inkstones. Meanwhile, a women’s living space, designed to reflect their tastes, features intricately crafted, colorful furniture that radiates charm.

At the Horim Museum’s main branch in Sillim-dong, Seoul, an array of handcrafted woodworks, worn and cherished by past generations, is currently on display.

Running until February 28 of next year, the exhibition also shines a spotlight on the life of the museum’s founder, Yoon Jang-seop. Born in Kaesong, Yoon began collecting cultural artifacts in 1971. He honed his expertise through interactions with figures such as Choi Soon-woo, his hometown senior and the former director of the National Museum of Korea, and Hwang Soo-young, the former president of Dongguk University.

“Cultural heritage is not private property. It should be preserved as a public asset for future generations. Through our cultural treasures, we can connect with and understand our ancestors - what an extraordinary experience that is!” This inscription in the museum reflects Yoon’s deep reverence for national heritage during his lifetime.

“Mr. Yoon believed in giving back to society through his wealth. He focused on two main endeavors: establishing the museum and cultural initiatives, and founding Seongbo Middle and High School nearby to nurture future leaders.”

The Horim Museum, which ranks among Korea’s top three private museums, houses a vast collection of over 20,000 items, including ceramics, metalwork, and calligraphy. Among its treasures are eight National Treasures, such as the Baekji Mookseo Myobeop Yeonhwagyeong (a Buddhist scripture in ink on white paper), 54 Treasures, and 11 Seoul-designated Tangible Cultural Assets.

Mr. Yoon’s collection, acquired up until his passing, is highly regarded for its diversity and quality. It serves as an invaluable resource for Korean art history research.

“In the realm of cultural heritage, Mr. Yoon is often mentioned alongside Kansong Jeon Hyeong-pil and Hoam Lee Byung-chul as a pivotal figure in the collection, preservation, and transmission of our national treasures to future generations.”

Though a successful entrepreneur, Yoon lived a life of frugality and discipline, sparing no expense when it came to cultural heritage. His legacy continues to inspire businesses to recognize the public and historical significance of Korea’s cultural assets.
