'로또'인가, '거품 붕괴'인가...300억 짜리 원나라 도자기가 단돈 2000만원?

소더비 등 국제 경매가에 비해 '파격'
화교 고미술 애호가들 방문 줄지어

서울 종로구 '인사동 문화의 거리'  한켠의 다보성갤러리(종로구 삼일대로 457, 수운회관)에서 진행중인 중국 골동품 경매에 해외미술시장에서의 추정가나 낙찰가보다 상상을 초월할 정도의 저렴한 가격의 도자 등 공예품이 대거 등장, 주목을 받고 있다. 

경매에는 중국 도자와 먹(墨), 각(角)‧호박(琥珀) 공예품과 코담배 병인 비연호(鼻煙壺) 등 모두 49점의 중국 골동품이 출품됐다. 

그중에는 원말명초 유리홍연지어문수이관(元末明初 釉里红莲池鱼纹兽耳罐), 명가정 청화쏘가리문개관(明嘉靖 青花鳜鱼纹盖罐), 청광서 종규문먹(淸光绪 钟馗纹墨), 청 서각상(淸 犀角像), 청 용문비연호(淸 龙纹鼻烟壶) 등 희귀하고 가치 있는 작품들이 포함되어 있다.

작품들은 중국 골동 특유의 화려함과 섬세한 세공으로 중국 고미술 애호가들의 눈길을 사로잡는다. 

산화동(구리가 녹슨 것) 채색유로 물고기 문양 등을 올려 유약을 발라 구워낸 '유리홍' 도자기의 일종인 '유리홍연지어문수이관'은 몸체 전면을 비늘같은 겹물결 문양으로 채우고 큼직한 잉어 주변에 홍련송이와 물풀잎 모양을 배치, 마치 한폭의 산수화를 대하는 것 같은 느낌을 갖게 한다. 

도자 이름 중 '수이관'은 상서로운 짐승의 머리를 '귀 모양'으로 어깨 4곳에 돌려 붙였다는 의미로 도자에 입체감을 더해주고 있다. 

경매 도록에 표기된 이 도자 작품의 낙찰 예정가는 시작가 1000만원으로 추정가는 2000만원으로 표기돼 있다. 

그런데 놀라운 사실은 국제 경매시장에서의 이 작품과 동일한 시대(원나라)에 동일한 기법으로 제작된 골동 도자의 추정가.  중국 최대의 미술시장 정보사이트 아트론(artron.net)에 따르면 2018년 6월 이 작품이 경매에 나왔을 때 추정가는 무려 300억원대 였다.  

삼국시대의 '삼고초려 이야기'가 그려진 원말명초 홍녹채삼고초려문관 (元末明初 红绿彩三顾茅庐图罐)은 다보성갤러리의 경매도록에는 추정가 2000만원~3000만원이지만 같은 기법으로 제작된 항아리의 아트론 경매가격표에는 30억원(2017년 5월 28일)으로 나타나 있다. 

명나라 시대의 도자로 연못 속 쏘가리 문양이 그려진 명가정 청화쏘가리문개관 (明嘉靖 青花鳜鱼纹盖罐)은 이번 경매 추정가 2000만원~3000만원이지만 동일한 기법으로 같은 시대에 제작된 도자 작품은 2015년 소더비 경매 낙찰가(10월 7일)가 3억1000만원대였다.   

청나라 말기의 항아리인 민국하허인 천강채서설풍년항(民国何许人 浅绛彩瑞雪丰年缸)은 시작가 200만원에 추정가 300만원으로 도록에 표기돼 있지만 '아트론'이 기록한 유사형태 작품의 2019년 경매가에는 2억3500만원이었다. 

이같은 도자 작품 뿐만이 아니다.  청나라 시대에 소뿔로 만들어진 서각연지어문필통(犀角莲池鱼纹笔筒)은 경매 추정가 200만원~300만원이지만 베이징의 세계적 경매회사인 북경보리박매유한공사(北京保利国际拍卖有限公司)의 유사제품 2007년 경매 추정가는 2000만원대였다. 

청나라 시대의 코끼리 모양 코담배 병인 여의상형비연호(如意象形鼻烟壺)는 출품가 10만원이지만 아트론의 유사 제품 2014년 추정가는 544만원이었다. 

청나라 연간의 호박약사불좌상(琥拍药师佛坐像)은 경매 추정가 100만원~300만원이지만 유사 제품의 2016년 경매 낙찰가는 3억5000만원(아트론)이었고, 청나라 건륭제 시대에 제작된 청건륭 법랑용향로(淸乾隆 琺琅龙香炉)는 경매 추정가 200만원~300만원인데 아트론이 2014년 평가한 유사제품 추정가는 1억2000만원 대였다. 

어떻게 이같은 일이 가능한 것일까. 

물론 중국이 '코로나 팬데믹'과 연이은 불경기에 시달리며 해당 작품들의 국제 경매시장 가격이 떨어지고 있어 '거품'이라는 지적도 있다. 그러나 이같은 주장은 동시에 경기에 민감한 골동 가격이 경기 순환의 흐름을 타고 또 언제 폭등할지 모른다는 가능성도 동시에 시사하고 있다.  

순전히 미술 투자자 입장에서만 보면 경매 현장에서 진품을 제대로 골라 구매했을 경우 '로또 쇼핑'이 될 수도 있는 것이다. 

앞서 지난 11월 열린 경매에서는 '시작' 단계여서 출품작 40점 중 국내외 중국 고미술 컬렉터들에게 21점이 팔려 52.5%의 낙찰률을 기록했다. 

경매 주관사인 다보성갤러리에 따르면 현재 진행중인 경매 온라인 사이트에도 출품작별로 많게는 하루 100명 이상 씩 방문하고 있으며 그중에는 동남아 화교들이 많은 것으로 알려졌다. 

한편 다보성 관계자는 중국 문화유산 경매와 관련 "1983년 창립 이래 40년 동안 국·공립박물관 및 국내 유수의 사립박물관에 보급하는 등 문화유산 보존과 향유에 앞장서고 있다"며 "최근 시작한 중국 문화유산 온라인 경매도 그같은 바램에서 시작됐다고 밝혔다.  

다보성갤러리는 선사시대부터 조선시대에 이르는 진귀한 우리 고미술품을 다수 소장하고 있으며 중국의 고미술품 역시 이 전체 소장품의 절반을 넘길 정도로 상당량을  소장하고 있다.

지난해 6월 28일에는 우샤오화(吴少华) 중국소장가협회 고문, 션지아신(宣家鑫) 상하이 서예가협회 부주석, 천커타오(陈克涛) 중국 상하이시 소장협회 상무 부회장 등 저명한 감정가 3인이 다보성 갤러리를 찾아 중국 관련 고미술품을 감정하며 "중국 박물관에서도 본 적이 없는 매우 광범위하고 종류도 다양하다"고 감탄사를 연발했다. 

이번에 출품된 49점의 작품들은 경매 기간 동안 다보성 갤러리 4층에서 직접 관람할 수 있고, 다보성갤러리 홈페이지를 통해서도 확인할 수 있다.

"It stands out as 'radical' compared to international auction prices, with visits from Chinese fine art connoisseurs lining up, including Sotheby's and others."

Insa-dong's cultural street in Jongno-gu, specifically at Daboseong Gallery, is currently hosting a Chinese antique auction that is gaining attention for featuring crafts, including ceramics, at remarkably affordable prices compared to estimated values or winning bids in the international art market.

The auction includes 49 Chinese antiques, such as Chinese ceramics, ink stick (墨), and crafts like 角 (jiao), and 琥珀 (hupo) crafts. These items are drawing significant interest for their prices that go beyond imagination when compared to estimates and winning bids in the overseas art market.

Rare pieces spanning from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, such as 『A ‘lotus pond and fish’ jar in underglaze copper red』, 『A ‘budai heshang’ amber figurine』, 『A ‘dragon’ snuff bottle』, will also be showcased.

The artworks captivate the attention of Chinese fine art enthusiasts with the distinctive vibrancy and delicate craftsmanship typical of Chinese bronzes. The 'A ‘lotus pond and fish’ jar in underglaze copper red(Yuhong Yan Jie Wu Shui Guan),' a type of 'Yuhong' pottery colored with copper and adorned with fish patterns, showcases the meticulous application of enamel. The frontal surface is filled with scale-like overlapping patterns, surrounding large carp with Lotus flowers and water plant leaf designs, creating a sensation reminiscent of a classical landscape painting.

However, a surprising fact is that the estimated values of bronze ceramics produced with the same technique during the same period (Yuan Dynasty) in the international auction market are remarkable. According to China's largest art market information site, Artron (artron.net), when this artwork appeared at auction in June 2018, the estimated value was a whopping 30 billion won.

The piece depicting the 'Three Friends of Winter' from the Three Kingdoms period, listed with an estimated value of 20-30 million won in Daboseong Gallery's auction catalog, showed a significant difference when compared to a jar with the same technique. The Artron auction price in May 2017 displayed a value of 3 billion won.

A piece from the Ming Dynasty with a carp pattern in a pond, listed with an estimated value of 20-30 million won in this auction, contrasts with a similar piece created with the same technique during the same era. The Sotheby's auction winning bid in October 7, 2015, was in the 310 million won range.

An urn from the late Qing Dynasty, listed with a starting bid of 2 million won and an estimated value of 3 million won in the auction catalog, differs significantly from the Artron-recorded auction price of a similar piece in 2019, which reached 235 million won.

These ceramic works are not the only ones. The 'Carved Rhino Horn Brush Holder' made from rhino horn during the Qing Dynasty has an estimated auction value of 2-3 million won, but a similar item auctioned by Poly International Auction Co., Ltd. in Beijing in 2007 had an estimated value in the 20 million won range.

The 'An Elephant with Ryui Snuff Bottle,' a snuff bottle shaped like an elephant from the Qing Dynasty, has a starting bid of 100,000 won, but a similar item evaluated by Artron in 2014 had an estimated value of 5.44 million won.

The 'An Bhaisajyaguru Amber Figurine' from the Qing Dynasty has an estimated auction value of 1-3 million won, but a similar item auctioned by Artron in 2016 reached a winning bid of 35 million won. Similarly, the 'A Carving Dragon on Enamel Incense Burner' from the Qianlong period in the Qing Dynasty has an estimated auction value of 2-3 million won, but a similar item evaluated by Artron in 2014 had an estimated value in the 120 million won range.

How is such a phenomenon possible?

Of course, there are claims that the international auction market prices for these works are falling due to China's 'Corona Pandemic' and consecutive economic downturns, and some criticize it as a 'bubble.' However, such arguments simultaneously suggest that the sensitive pricing of antique bronzes may follow the economic cycle and may explode at any time.

From the perspective of art investors, if genuine pieces are properly selected and purchased at auction, it could be a 'lottery shopping' experience. In the auction held last November, at the 'start' stage where 21 out of 40 exhibited works were sold to domestic and international Chinese art collectors, achieving a 52.5% sales rate.

According to Daboseong Gallery, the auction organizer, the ongoing online auction site has attracted more than 100 visitors per day for each exhibited work, and among them, it is known that many are ethnic Chinese from Southeast Asia.

Meanwhile, a representative from Daboseong Gallery stated regarding the auction of Chinese cultural heritage, "For the past 40 years since our establishment in 1983, we have been at the forefront of promoting and distributing cultural heritage to national and public museums as well as renowned private museums for conservation and enjoyment." He also revealed that the recent launch of the online auction for Chinese cultural heritage began with the same aspiration.

Daboseong Gallery possesses numerous valuable Korean art pieces ranging from the prehistoric era to the Joseon Dynasty, and it also holds a considerable amount of Chinese art, surpassing half of the total collection.

On June 28th of last year, three distinguished appraisers, Wu Shaohua, Advisor to the Chinese Collector's Association, Xuan Jiaxin, Vice President of the Shanghai Calligraphy Association, and Chen Ketao, Executive Vice President of the Shanghai Art Collection Association, visited Daboseong Gallery to appraise Chinese-related artworks. They exclaimed, "The artworks are very extensive and diverse, something we have never seen even in Chinese museums."

The 49 pieces exhibited in this auction can be directly viewed at the 4th floor of Daboseong Gallery during the auction period. Additionally, they can be explored through the Daboseong Gallery website.
