거북의 등껍질(玳瑁)을 잘게 쪼개 용과 봉황 무늬로 재구성한 대모 용봉문 사각상이다.
장방형의 윗면에는 왕을 상징하는 용과 태평성대에 나타난다는 상서로운 봉황이 정밀하게 묘사되어 있어 우수한 대모 공예 솜씨를 확인할 수 있다.
4개의 다리는 무늬가 조각된 윗부분과 무늬가 없는 아래부분이 아름답게 조화를 이룬다.
