The Vermilion Lacquered Box (Juchilham) is a rectangular wooden container made for storing various items and exemplifies the orderly, utilitarian qualities of everyday furniture in the Joseon Dynasty.
The entire surface is uniformly coated with juchil—red lacquer made by mixing red pigment with natural lacquer. This finish not only protects the wood but also imparts a soft, warm hue and texture.
The lid is connected to the body and is outlined by a single incised line running along the top edge. A circular metal ornament and latch adorn the center of the front, while a petal-shaped metal fitting at the bottom adds a touch of subtle decoration.
Short legs are attached to each corner of the base, lifting the box off the ground to prevent moisture damage. Three metal hinges on the back allow the lid to open smoothly, and ring-shaped metal handles on both sides provide convenient portability.
