"China Claims Its Artifact"… Designation of *Jeungdogaja* as a Treasure Drifts 10 Years Later

【Anchor Commentary】
Controversy is mounting over the designation of the 'Jeungdogaja,' believed to be metal movable type from the Goryeo Dynasty, as a national treasure.
While the Chinese academic community claims it is an artifact from their Song or Yuan dynasties, the national treasure designation process in Korea has been stalled for nearly a decade.
During a parliamentary audit, allegations were even raised that key data was omitted during the past deliberation process.
Reporter Lee Sang-ju reports.

【Reporter】
The 'Jeungdogaja' is a artifact that could potentially have been produced 138 years before the Jikji Simche Yojeol, the world's oldest existing metal movable type book.

If confirmed to be Goryeo Dynasty metal movable type, it is a relic that could rewrite the history of world printing.

Controversy over its authenticity has continued for 10 years since its designation as a national treasure was rejected in 2017; however, during a recent parliamentary audit, allegations were raised that key measurements supporting the type size and typesetting feasibility were omitted during the deliberation process at the time.

▶ Interview: Im Oh-kyung / Member of the Democratic Party of Korea
- "Is this the attitude of the National Heritage Administration, which should be discovering even one more national heritage?"

▶ Interview: Heo Min / Administrator of the National Heritage Administration
- "I think something is wrong."

The National Heritage Administration proposed a "bulk open call" method as an alternative, stating that it would conduct a broad investigation into metal movable type scattered both domestically and internationally.

However, criticism is emerging that they are merely delaying a conclusion without properly reviewing the scientific analysis results that have already been secured.

▶ Interview: Im Oh-kyung / Member of the Democratic Party of Korea
- "They are resorting to the trick of an open call. At the National Heritage Committee meeting last August, there were also opinions that the justification for the open call for the *Jeungdogaja* was unclear. Were you not informed of this?"

▶ Interview: Heo Min / Administrator of the National Heritage Administration
- "Yes."

▶ Interview: Im Oh-kyung / Member of the Democratic Party of Korea
- "They are even omitting reports. The officials."

Meanwhile, the Chinese academic community is showing signs of classifying the *Jeungdogaja* as artifacts from the Song and Yuan dynasties.

The controversy surrounding the history of our metal movable type is spreading beyond our borders.

Critics point out that it is urgent to restore trust in the treasure designation process, along with objective verification to determine the authenticity of the *Jeungdogaja*.
