This wooden box is decorated using the najeon (mother-of-pearl inlay) technique, in which thinly sliced pieces of shell are intricately arranged. It is characterized by its brilliant yet refined beauty.
The najeon technique has been handed down since the Goryeo Dynasty and became an established craft combining practicality and decorative artistry during the Joseon Dynasty. In particular, Joseon-era najeon boxes are known for their elegant forms, restrained motifs, and meticulous craftsmanship. They served not only as containers for valuables but also as important decorative elements.
The design of the "Ten Symbols of Longevity" (sipjangsaeng, 十長生) featured on this artifact includes the sun, mountains, water, pine trees, turtles, cranes, deer, elixir plants, clouds, and rocks—traditional motifs symbolizing long life. These auspicious symbols were favored by the royal court and the literati, and they embodied ideals of longevity and immortality. As such, they functioned not only as decorative designs but also as expressions of hope and spiritual belief.
This artifact is considered a precious example of Joseon-period najeon craft, showcasing a high level of technical skill and aesthetic sensibility through its precise workmanship, balanced composition, and the enduring luster of the mother-of-pearl even after centuries.
